APHRC Unveils State-of-the-Art Knowledge Hub as It Marks 25 Years

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) has unveiled a new state-of-the-art Knowledge Hub aimed at strengthening Africa’s research, innovation, and evidence-based policymaking ecosystem.

The launch, held in Nairobi on Wednesday as part of the institution’s silver jubilee celebration, marked a major milestone in APHRC’s 25 years of advancing research, policy engagement, and sustainable development across the continent.

According to the organization, the Knowledge Hub is an extension of its Ulwazi Place facility and is designed to serve as a center for learning, collaboration, and innovation. The hub features smart conferencing facilities and collaborative spaces expected to bring together researchers, policymakers, development partners, private-sector leaders, civil society groups, and young innovators from across sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking during the launch on behalf of Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Shaukat Abdulrazak, described the facility as a strategic investment in Africa’s future.

He said Africa’s transformation would increasingly depend on the continent’s ability to generate and apply evidence to solve development challenges, adding that the Knowledge Hub demonstrates Africa’s readiness to shape its development trajectory through research, innovation, and collaboration.

Abdulrazak further noted that institutions linking research and public policy are essential for building resilient economies and responsive governance systems, especially as governments grapple with climate change, food insecurity, digital transformation, and public health challenges.

Over the past two and a half decades, APHRC has earned recognition for its research contributions in public health, education, urbanization, population studies, and data science. The organization said the new infrastructure reflects a renewed commitment to expanding African-led research and strengthening regional partnerships.

APHRC Executive Director Catherine Kyobutungi said the new facility symbolizes the institution’s growth and long-term vision for the continent.

She stated that the Knowledge Hub would serve as an inclusive platform where ideas converge, partnerships flourish, and African-driven solutions are developed to tackle Africa’s challenges.

Kyobutungi added that the infrastructure would strengthen the institution’s ability to support governments and regional organizations with high-quality evidence and actionable policy insights.

“This building is more than a physical infrastructure, it will be the nerve center of our vision for a truly African knowledge system,” she said.

The launch event attracted senior government officials, diplomats, development partners, academic institutions, private sector representatives, researchers, civil society organizations, and members of the media.
