APC GOVERNORS AT LOGGERHEADS

ABUJA, Nigeria— The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors’ forum is facing an internal dispute after 16 governors reaffirmed Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State as chairman and rejected a rival declaration that named Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as the forum’s new leader.

The disagreement played out over two days in Abuja. On Thursday night, some APC governors reportedly announced Mbah as chairman during a meeting at the Ogun State Governors’ Lodge.

Less than 24 hours later, a group of 16 governors met in a closed-door session at the Imo State Governors’ Lodge and passed a vote of confidence in Uzodimma as chairman and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani as deputy chairman.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris moved the motion affirming Uzodimma’s leadership, describing him as the “undisputed leader” of the forum. Governors present included those from Ondo, Gombe, Kaduna, Edo, Sokoto, Ebonyi, Borno, Lagos, Kogi, Kano, Yobe, Kebbi, Benue, and Jigawa. Taraba’s governor attended briefly, while Nasarawa State was represented by its deputy governor.

Sources within the party cited disagreements over financial management and leadership style as factors behind the split. Political analysts said the dispute reflects early maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that the meeting came hours after Uzodimma led APC governors to submit President Bola Tinubu’s nomination forms.

The presidency has reportedly urged all parties to maintain the status quo. With two factions now publicly asserting leadership claims, the development marks one of the most visible divisions within the APC governors’ forum in recent years.
