North West Crime Activist Thato Molosankwe Shot Dead at Home in Mahikeng
MAHIKENG, South Africa — Community activist and traditional healer Thato Molosankwe was shot dead at his home in Lomanyaneng village near Mahikeng early Wednesday morning, police confirmed.
Molosankwe, 48, sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack and died at the scene. The South African Police Service said the shooting occurred in the early hours of 20 May 2026.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Puleng Dimpane condemned the killing and ordered the deployment of maximum police resources to track down the attackers. She said investigators would “leave no stone unturned” in bringing those responsible to justice. The case has been handed to the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, which is treating it as a targeted assassination.
Police described Molosankwe as “a community-minded individual who played an important role in assisting police efforts aimed at fighting crime and corruption, as well as strengthening relations between the SAPS and communities”. He worked closely with law enforcement and community structures in Mahikeng to improve safety and accountability.
Known for anti-crime activism
Molosankwe first drew national attention in 2017 when he walked 1,317km from Cape Town to Mahikeng to raise awareness about women and child abuse. The campaign, dubbed the #FatherSonMentorshipWalk, also focused on gender-based violence, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, and violence against LGBT people.
He was also a traditional healer and ran a community gym in Mahikeng, charging minimal fees to keep it accessible. Local leaders said he was outspoken about crime and corruption in the North West province.
Reactions and calls for justice
North West Community Safety MEC Wessels Morweng described Molosankwe as a friend who was “fair and outspoken” and urged residents to remain calm and assist police with information. Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo condemned the killing and called for calm while investigations continue.
The Moral Regeneration Movement in the North West also condemned the murder, citing a rise in violent crimes targeting businesspeople in Mahikeng.
Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tips via the MySAPS App.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
