2027: Pantami Rejects APC Gombe Consensus, Calls It “Coronation”
GOMBE, Nigeria— Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has publicly rejected the consensus arrangement that produced Dr. Jamilu Ishiyaku Gwamna as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a statement released on Sunday, Pantami described the process as a “coronation” rather than a genuine democratic selection, arguing that it undermined the principles of fairness and internal party contest. He said the arrangement denied other aspirants a level playing field and risked weakening the APC’s credibility among its members and supporters in the state.
“I cannot support a process that shuts out participation and imposes outcomes without recourse to the will of party members,” Pantami stated. “The APC must reflect the values it preaches if it hopes to retain the trust of the people.”
Dr. Jamilu Ishiyaku Gwamna, a former Managing Director of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, was named APC’s consensus candidate following consultations led by party stakeholders in Gombe. The arrangement was intended to avoid a primary election and present a unified front ahead of 2027.
Pantami, who hails from Gombe State and remains an influential figure within the APC, did not indicate whether he would challenge the decision through party mechanisms or pursue another political path. His rejection adds to growing tensions within the state chapter over candidate selection and internal party democracy.
The APC leadership in Gombe has yet to formally respond to Pantami’s remarks. Party officials had previously defended the consensus model as a strategy to reduce rancour and streamline preparations for the 2027 polls.
The development is likely to intensify debate within the APC on the use of consensus arrangements in candidate selection, particularly in states with multiple aspirants and strong grassroots mobilisation.
