ABUJA, April 30, 2026 — The West African Journalists for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (WAJESHA) has strongly condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks against African nationals living in South Africa, describing the violence as cruel, unacceptable and a betrayal of the continent’s shared values.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, the regional media network said the attacks have no place in Africa and called for urgent action by South African authorities to protect lives and restore confidence among affected communities.

WAJESHA said the victims of the attacks are fellow Africans who share a common history of struggle, colonial oppression and aspirations for a better future, stressing that violence against them amounts to an attack on the continent as a whole.

The organisation expressed concern over the psychological and emotional trauma suffered by victims, noting that fear, displacement and loss could leave long-lasting scars beyond the immediate violence. It also warned that such attacks risk undermining political and economic ties across the region by discouraging trade and weakening cooperation among African states.

WAJESHA further described the attacks as contrary to the ideals of Pan-Africanism, saying the actions run against the vision of unity and solidarity championed by Africa’s founding leaders.

The group called on the South African government to immediately apprehend and prosecute those responsible, deploy adequate security measures to halt the violence, and launch a nationwide campaign promoting tolerance, dignity and peaceful coexistence among Africans.

It also urged civil society groups, religious leaders, media organisations and citizens in South Africa to speak out against the attacks, insisting that silence in the face of injustice only emboldens perpetrators.

The statement was signed by Aminu Adamu Ahmed, Editor-in-Chief of WAJESHA, who reaffirmed the network’s commitment to credible public-interest journalism across West Africa.
