ABUJA, Nigeria — The University of Abuja (recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja) has released an official list of directors, deputy directors, and key administrative appointments across its academic centres and institutes, alongside the composition of its standing and ad hoc committees.

The announcement outlines a broad institutional framework aimed at strengthening governance, academic delivery, and research coordination within the university.

Academic Centres and Institutes

A total of 41 academic centres and institutes were listed, each with designated directors and deputy directors. These include strategic units such as the Academic Planning Unit, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit, General Studies Unit, and the Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education.

Other notable entities include the Abuja Leadership Centre, Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technology, and the Centre for Petroleum Studies and Energy Research, reflecting the university’s growing focus on leadership, technology, and energy research.

Senior academic figures appointed as directors include Professors Otaki Alanana, Paul Chima, Isah Nurudeen Mohammed, Sylvanus Uqo, and Abdulhamid Ozohu-Suleiman, among others, supported by deputy directors across various specializations.

Expanded Research and Specialized Centres

The institution also highlighted newer and specialized centres such as the Centre for Gender, Security and Youth Advancement, Centre for Migration Studies, Centre for Sustainable Development, Centre for Diabetes Studies, and the Centre for Community Health and Systems Support.

These centres are expected to drive interdisciplinary research and policy engagement in critical national and global sectors.

Student Affairs Leadership

In student administration, Prof. Julius Ajah was named Dean of Student Affairs, with Dr. Oluwa Adeipe Aqbonu and Dr. Madina Umar serving as Deputy Deans.

Committees and Governance Structure

The university further constituted several standing and ad hoc committees to enhance institutional oversight and operational efficiency.

Key committees include the Senate Business Committee chaired by Prof. Dagwa Ishaya; Hostel Management Committee chaired by Prof. Margret Bahal; Campus Environmental Sanitation and Beautification Committee chaired by Prof. Rafatu Abdulhamid; 5-Year Strategic Plan Committee chaired by Prof. Clement Alawa; Project Monitoring and Evaluation Committee chaired by Prof. Amos Gadzama; and the Mock Accreditation and Resource Verification Committee chaired by Prof. Wesley Nafarnda.

Committee memberships draw from a mix of senior academics and administrative officers, with provisions for secretarial appointments by the Registrar.

Institutional Outlook

The comprehensive appointments signal a renewed administrative direction for the university as it seeks to consolidate its academic standards, expand research output, and improve service delivery across its campuses.

University officials say the restructuring aligns with broader national goals in higher education reform and institutional competitiveness.
