The Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media post alleging that Hyacinth Alia was photographed worshipping the revered monarch.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the team described the widely circulated image as fake and likely generated using artificial intelligence, warning that it was deliberately designed to misinform the public and incite religious and ethnic division amid ongoing security challenges in Benue State.
According to the statement, the content falsely attempts to link the Sultan to the crisis in the state while promoting claims of religious bias. The media team stressed that such narratives are baseless and pose a serious threat to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
“The image in question is fake and mischievous. It is a dangerous attempt to drag the person and office of the Sultan into matters that are entirely unrelated,” the statement read.
The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, and Co-Chairman of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, was described as a longstanding advocate of peace, interfaith harmony, and national cohesion.
The media team further clarified that the Sultan does not appear in the manner depicted in the image, emphasizing that Islamic teachings prohibit acts such as prostration to any being other than God, thereby rendering the claim fundamentally inconsistent with his faith and principles.
Raising concerns over a pattern of disinformation, the statement noted that similar false narratives have been propagated by certain individuals on social media, potentially worsening tensions in already fragile regions.
The team called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take decisive action against the spread of fake news and those responsible for inciting division. It also urged religious and community leaders across all faiths to encourage responsible communication, particularly online.
Reaffirming its commitment to national unity, the Media Team pledged continued support for initiatives that promote peace, mutual respect, and stability across Nigeria.
The statement was signed by
Prince Bashir Adefaka
on behalf of the Sultan’s Media Team.
