Seychelles Tops Latest Africa Rankings as Nigeria Slips, Liberia Posts Strongest gain
Seychelles has retained its position as Africa’s highest-ranked country in the latest continental standings by the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (See full ranking here), while several major economies, including Nigeria, recorded declines and countries such as Liberia and Angola posted significant gains. The latest data, covering 54 African countries over a 10-year period, shows Seychelles ranked first, consolidating its rise from seventh place in earlier years and recording a six-place overall improvement. Mauritius followed in second place, while Cabo Verde, South Africa, and Botswana completed the top five.
The rankings highlight widening contrasts across the continent, with smaller and more stable economies continuing to dominate the upper tier, while several larger states experienced mixed performance.
In West Africa, Nigeria slipped three places to 33rd, underscoring a continued downward trend in recent years. By contrast, Liberia recorded the sharpest improvement among all countries listed, rising 10 places to 26th, while Angola and Sierra Leone each gained nine positions.
North African countries delivered mixed results. Morocco climbed five places to eighth, emerging as one of the region’s strongest performers, while Egypt edged up to 24th. Tunisia fell three places to ninth, reflecting a modest reversal from previous years.
In East Africa, Kenya improved to 10th place, maintaining its position among the continent’s leading performers, while Rwanda slipped to 14th and Tanzania held relatively steady at 15th.
At the bottom of the table, South Sudan remained last in 54th place, with Somalia ranked 53rd and Eritrea 52nd, indicating little change among the lowest-ranked countries.
Analysts said the latest standings underscore the uneven pace of development across Africa, with some countries showing sustained institutional and economic progress while others continue to face structural and governance challenges.
