Political Earthquake in Zamfara as APC coordinator for Tinubu/Shettima in the 2023 elections dumps APC, Joins NDC With Thousands of Supporters
ABUJA — In a major political development that could reshape the power equation in Zamfara State ahead of future elections, former Senator Kabir Marafa has officially joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC), bringing along a large wave of supporters in what party leaders describe as another major boost to its fast-growing national movement.
Marafa, a former senator and one of Zamfara’s most influential political figures, was formally received by the party’s National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee during a high-level meeting in Abuja.
Kabir Marafa was formerly a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He was elected as Senator for Zamfara Central under the APC in 2011 and re-elected in 2015. He was a prominent APC chieftain in Zamfara and served as the Zamfara APC coordinator for Tinubu/Shettima in the 2023 elections.
His move to the NDC marks his exit from the APC camp.
The NDC leadership said the former lawmaker has fully committed himself to driving the party’s vision and expanding its influence in Zamfara State, where he is expected to lead the party’s structure and grassroots mobilisation.
The party described his entry as a significant milestone in its rapid nationwide expansion, noting that the NDC continues to attract prominent politicians and supporters from across the country.
According to the party, Marafa’s defection is expected to strengthen the NDC’s political foothold in the North-West and position it as a major force ahead of upcoming political contests.
The leadership also used the occasion to call on Nigerians, especially the people of Zamfara State, to continue to support efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development.
In a further sign of growing momentum, the NDC said Nigerians have been registering in large numbers as members of the party, urging aspirants seeking party positions and elective offices to complete their registration before the end of the ongoing membership exercise.
The party announced that its primary elections are expected to hold towards the end of May, while congresses have been scheduled for next week across the country to harmonise party structures.
Calling for peaceful and orderly congresses nationwide, the leadership said the party is steadily building what it described as “the beautiful bride of Nigerian politics.”
The NDC also claimed that within less than three months of its emergence, it has become the fastest-growing political party in Nigeria and now ranks as the third-largest party in the country.
It further stated that the party remains free from internal crises, court cases, and litigation, urging the public to disregard what it called propaganda and misinformation targeted at slowing its progress.
The party also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for uploading its logo and the names of its officials on the commission’s official website, describing the development as clear proof that the party has no legal encumbrances.
Party leaders expressed confidence that more high-profile politicians and supporters would continue to join the NDC in the coming days and weeks.
