STATE OF NIGERIAN YOUTH SURVEY

The State of Nigerian Youth Survey is an ambitious and comprehensive initiative designed to capture the voices, experiences, and aspirations of Nigeria’s youth, who make up the majority of the country’s population. This landmark survey seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the challenges, priorities, and perceptions of young Nigerians, while also shedding light on their role in shaping the nation’s future. The survey focuses on critical issues affecting Nigerian youth, including: - Unemployment and Economic Opportunity: Exploring barriers such as skills gaps, inadequate training, and limited job creation, while also highlighting youth interest in entrepreneurship and government sector employment. - Education and Skill Development: Addressing the mismatch between educational outputs and market needs, the survey investigates how education systems can better prepare youth for the demands of a fast-evolving economy. - Social and Political Participation: Understanding youth perspectives on governance, corruption, federal restructuring, and their role in reshaping Nigeria’s international image. - Insecurity and Social Stability: Examining the impact of insecurity and systemic challenges on youth participation in economic, political, and social activities. The initiative, launched by Citizen Commons, aims to collect insights from up to 25,000 young Nigerians across the country’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring inclusivity across urban, rural, ethnic, and economic divides. The data will be used to inform evidence-based policymaking and propose actionable recommendations to address youth priorities. The survey comes at a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history, as the country stands on the cusp of demographic transformation. With a median age of 18.1 years, Nigeria’s youthful population presents both immense potential and significant challenges. If harnessed effectively through education reform, skills development, and job creation, this demographic advantage could drive unprecedented economic growth. However, failure to act decisively risks turning this opportunity into a demographic disaster marked by unemployment, poverty, and instability.
