Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening South-South Cooperation following a high-level bilateral engagement in Trinidad and Tobago led by the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC).

The delegation, headed by NTAC Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, undertook the official visit on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s diplomatic reach and deepen partnerships with Caribbean nations.

According to a statement issued by the NTAC’s Information and Public Relations Unit, the visit featured strategic meetings at the Federal Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago as well as engagements at the Nigerian Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and advancing collaboration under the South-South Cooperation framework, particularly in key sectors such as technical assistance, education, healthcare, capacity building, and cultural exchange.

NTAC said the visit reflects the Tinubu administration’s foreign policy priorities of promoting solidarity, shared prosperity, and sustainable development among developing countries. The agency’s broader mandate is to deploy Nigerian professionals to partner countries as a form of technical diplomacy and soft power engagement.

During the engagement, the Nigerian delegation held talks with senior government stakeholders in Trinidad and Tobago, with discussions attended by the ChargĂ© d’Affaires a.i., Dankaro Angye Ashumate, alongside the Head of Chancery, Mrs. Linda Hills.

Officials from both countries explored new areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening diplomatic and development cooperation.

Speaking during the visit, Yusuf Buba Yakub emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to expand the scope of its technical assistance programmes to Trinidad and Tobago, building on the longstanding historical and cultural ties between both nations.

He noted that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a key driver of development cooperation across the Global South.

The delegation also included Ambassador Bello Jaye, Director of Programmes, and other senior officials of the Corps, who contributed to identifying priority areas for future collaboration.

The visit also served as an opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s achievements under the Technical Aid Corps Scheme, which has over the years deployed thousands of skilled professionals to countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.
