FCT 2027 In Focus: The Case for Equitable Representation in the Federal Capital Territory
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, critical questions of fairness, equity, and inclusive representation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) must be brought to the forefront of public discourse. The time has come for citizens, political stakeholders, and democratic institutions to confront longstanding imbalances in how power is distributed across the territory.
A Senator from Gwagwalada or Kuje
It is both just and politically necessary that the next FCT Senator emerges from either Gwagwalada or Kuje. For too long, certain areas of the Federal Capital Territory have dominated the political space, monopolizing opportunities for representation and leadership while other communities have been sidelined.
A more balanced distribution of leadership opportunities across the FCT is not merely a political talking point, it is a democratic imperative.
The communities of Gwagwalada and Kuje have contributed immensely to the fabric of the FCT, and it is only fair that their voices be elevated at the highest levels of legislative representation.
Zoning the Abuja South House of Representatives Seat
In the same vein, the Abuja South House of Representatives seat should rightfully be zoned to either Kuje or Kwali. This is not merely a matter of preference or political convenience. It is a call for justice, recognition, and the strengthening of democratic values through equitable power-sharing.
The communities of Kuje and Kwali have long awaited meaningful political representation commensurate with their populations, contributions, and stake in the future of the FCT. Zoning this seat to either of these areas would be a decisive step toward correcting historical inequities and ensuring that no community feels left behind in Nigeria's democratic process.
Deliberate Inclusiveness as a Democratic Value
The path to unity and sustainable development in the FCT lies in deliberate inclusiveness. When leadership opportunities are concentrated in a few areas, it breeds resentment, disengagement, and a weakening of democratic culture. Conversely, when representation is broad, balanced, and reflective of the diversity of the territory, it strengthens civic participation and fosters a shared sense of belonging.
The 2027 elections present a unique opportunity to correct the course, to build a Federal Capital Territory where every area, from Abuja Municipal to Kwali, from Bwari to Kuje, sees itself represented and respected in the halls of power.
A Call to Action
As stakeholders, voters, and lovers of democracy, we must advocate for structures and arrangements that reflect the rich diversity of the FCT. Political parties, civil society organizations, and community leaders must rise to the occasion and champion the cause of equitable zoning and inclusive representation ahead of 2027.
The FCT deserves better. Its people deserve better. And with deliberate action, a brighter, more inclusive future is well within reach.
"Deliberate Inclusiveness for a Brighter FCT."
