El-Rufai Stands Firm, Pleads Not Guilty as Court Process Begins
The ICPC on Monday presented a nine-count charge against the former governor, bordering on alleged advance fee fraud and money laundering. However, El-Rufai, maintaining his innocence, pleaded not guilty to all counts, signaling readiness to challenge the accusations through due legal process.
The case, presided over by Justice Darius Khobo, saw a procedural adjustment by the prosecution, which separated El-Rufai’s trial from that of co-defendant Amadu Sule due to the latter’s absence on medical grounds. The court approved the amendment, allowing proceedings against El-Rufai to move forward without delay.
Legal observers note that the former governor’s calm disposition and immediate not-guilty plea reflect confidence in his defence, as his legal team pushed for bail on liberal terms and indicated ongoing legal applications.
While the prosecution urged the court to set a trial date and ensure El-Rufai’s continued attendance, the defence emphasized his willingness to cooperate fully with judicial authorities.
The court has adjourned the matter to April 14, 2026, for a ruling on the bail application. In the interim, El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody.
Supporters of the former governor view the development as part of a legal process that will ultimately clear his name, insisting that he is prepared to defend his record and reputation in court.
