ABUJA — The Director-General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, has identified education and technical expertise as the primary engines for sustaining democratic stability within the West African sub-region.

Speaking at the 2026 Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum in Abuja, Yakub argued that the survival of democracy depends less on the act of voting and more on the resilience of institutions and the development of human capital. The forum was organized to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

STRENGTHENING THE REGION THROUGH HUMAN CAPITAL

Represented by his Media Assistant, Nkem Anyatta-Lafia, the NTAC chief noted that Nigeria’s leadership in ECOWAS has evolved beyond economic aid and peacekeeping to include significant investment in skills transfer.

"Democracy thrives on a well-informed populace," Yakub stated, emphasizing that NTAC’s mandate is directly linked to regional security. He pointed out that poverty and lack of expertise are often the root causes of political upheaval, and institutional capacity must be bolstered to withstand shocks to democratic governance.

A LEGACY OF SOFT POWER

Highlighting Nigeria's "soft power" contributions, Yakub revealed that over 11,000 Nigerian professionals, including doctors, engineers, and legal experts, have been deployed to more than 40 countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific over the last 40 years.

These deployments align with Nigeria’s current 4-D Foreign Policy framework: Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.

HIGH-LEVEL ENGAGEMENT

The forum, held at the Yar’Adua Centre, served as a gathering of Nigeria's top policy drivers. Notable attendees included Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi; and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello.

The event concluded with a collective call from stakeholders to increase regional collaboration in the face of emerging threats to governance. The forum also paid tribute to the founding vision of ECOWAS, specifically the role of General Yakubu Gowon and the historic Lagos Accord.
